Prevention of venous thromboembolism in patients with cancer 30

Abstract
Risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) is elevated in cancer and leads to high morbidity and mortality in this population. Drug prophylaxis is questionable, due hemorrhagic risk in these patients, and explains the importance of selecting high risk population, depending on the type of cancer and on individual risk factors for thrombosis. While the indications for prevention are well established during hospitalization for an acute condition and during cancer surgery, mostly with low molecular weight heparin, questions persist as to the indication of prophylaxis for outpatients receiving chemotherapy, and to the place of direct oral anticoagulant in this indication.
